Franklin County Parks and Recreation is thrilled to announce that Waid Park has been chosen as the host site for the 2025 USA Cycling State Championship Cross Country Mountain Bike Race. Scheduled for June 8, the event is expected to draw 100 to 200 riders, continuing its tradition of attracting participants not only from Virginia but also from neighboring states like West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Cyclists holding a Virginia USA Cycling license will compete in this prestigious event.

The race, officially named the "Punchy Pigg," will serve as the third and final race of the Virginia Mountain Bike Series. The selection of Waid Park highlights its reputation as a premier destination for mountain biking, thanks to its outstanding trail system. This recognition comes in part through the efforts of Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge (VBR), which introduced race director David Harlow to the park and its potential.

In October, Harlow visited Waid Park to discuss event logistics with Franklin County staff. Plans for the championship include onsite camping, food trucks, and amenities to ensure a memorable experience for racers and spectators alike.

The Parks and Recreation Department is excited for the opportunity to showcase our community, our exceptional trails, and this beautiful park to visitors and spectators. The Department is hopeful that Waid Park will continue to serve as the state championship race location for years to come.

The championship is expected to generate significant interest in the local area, highlighting Franklin County as a destination for outdoor recreation. With its scenic trails and welcoming atmosphere, Waid Park is set to leave a lasting impression on cyclists and visitors alike.
