[ARCHIVED] Waid Park's Popularity Spurs New Reforestation Project

Waid Park Pigg River Trail

Waid Park, a beloved outdoor destination in Franklin County, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. With its extensive trail network attracting hikers and bikers, and the scenic Pigg River offering tubing, wading, and fishing opportunities, the park has become a cornerstone for outdoor recreation. It also serves as a venue for special events like the “River of Lights” and the upcoming 2025 USA Cycling State Championship Cross Country Mountain Bike Race.

To enhance Waid Park’s offerings while preserving its natural beauty, Franklin County Parks and Recreation has partnered with the Virginia Department of Forestry on an ambitious reforestation initiative. The plan involves converting 32 acres of underutilized fields—areas unsuitable for agriculture due to their proximity to trails and the river—into flourishing forests.

The Virginia Department of Forestry has committed to executing this project at no cost to the county, providing materials, planting native tree species, and maintaining the young forest for one year to ensure successful growth. The selected trees will not only revive native and diminished varieties but also boost recreational appeal and improve water quality in the area. The donated value of the project is estimated between $75,000 and $100,000.

Residents and park visitors stand to benefit from the initiative in numerous ways. The reforestation will enhance water quality by reducing runoff, expand opportunities for trail development, and create enriched habitats for wildlife and native plants.

Waid Park’s continued evolution underscores Franklin County’s commitment to balancing recreation with conservation. As the park grows in popularity, efforts like this reforestation project ensure it remains a cherished resource for generations to come.
